FAQ

We will let applicants know either way by mid-May.

Our volunteers are an important part of the Festival team. Tasks include:

  • Ticketing (scanning tickets, queue management)
  • Ushering and cinema duties
  • Distribution and collection of market research
  • Event and production assistance across special events, including Opening Night, Closing Night and SoundKILDA music video awards
  • Assisting with the filmmaker professional development program
  • Distribution and collection of audience voting
  • Assisting audience with questions, directions etc.

We will be giving priority to applicants who are currently studying or recently graduated in the fields of event management, film studies or similar courses.

Further to that, we look for

  • Enthusiasm and passion for film, arts and festivals
  • Great communication skills
  • Dedication, commitment and punctuality

We would like a minimum commitment of two shifts across the ten days. We will give preference to volunteers with greater availability, as it cuts down on the time required to brief and train before each shift. On average, volunteers are rostered for three shifts, varying in length from approx. 4 – 8 hours.

Not exactly. As it’s a film festival, there is quite a bit of downtime when the sessions are screening. The busiest times are pre session (ticket scanning and queue management) and post session (audience feedback and voting). The upside is that you do get an opportunity to view some of the short films when the sessions are running.

As part of the Festival we run a filmmaker professional development series, with forums that cover all topics about filmmaking and the film industry. If you are rostered on to one of these shifts you will need to assist with ushering audiences. However, once the forum has started you will need to stay in the room to help with latecomers, or with audience Q&A. These shifts may be of particular interest to you if you’re studying film and filmmaking.

The shift times on the volunteer form are just an indication of availability. Not all the shifts will finish as late as indicated, and we may not need all volunteers to stay that late. If you are available on that day but would need to leave earlier, please select the shifts and then provide more information on the following page.

If you have a change in your availability, or you need to withdraw your application, please let us know as soon as possible by emailing festivalvolunteer@portphillip.vic.gov.au

Any job openings within the Festivals team will be advertised through the City of Port Phillip website, and usually on Arts Hub as well.

Not a problem! Please contact festivalvolunteer@portphillip.vic.gov.au  with any further questions you might have.
