Sound in Short Films: A Consideration From Script To Screening
An esteemed panel of emerging and established filmmakers will discuss how they tell the sonic narrative and enhance the quality of short films through sound. They will delve into key aspects of audio production including music, dialogue, voice over and sound effects.
Moderator/Sound mixer - Doron Kipen
Doron Kipen, the founder and owner of Music and Effects is a multi-award winning sound editor and re-recording mixer. He has received multiple Australian Screen Sound Guild awards, Inside Film Magazine award and an Australian Film Institute award for Best Sound. Doron mixed the Academy Award® winning short animation, The Lost Thing and the feature animation Mary and Max.
Sound Designer - Niels Gabriels
Niels Gabriels graduated from Swinburne University of Technology in 2015, having specialised in sound design throughout his degree. Niels' graduate project Somniloquy won 'Best Achievement in Sound Post Production' at the 2016 St Kilda Film Festival and has gone on to be screened at festivals around the world.
Recordist - Alex Wakefield
Alex Wakefield has been a working sound recordist for the past 3 years. Being a part of crews for shorts, indie features, TVC's and corporate videos of all budgets and sizes. Alex has also dabbled in the audio post world to try and better understand how to record better location audio for post production.
Director - Monique Mulcahy
Monique Mulcahy is a young writer/ director from Melbourne and a recent Graduate from the Victorian College of the Arts, School of Film and Television. Her passion for and knowledge of genre filmmaking has contributed to her unique visual style and approach to storytelling that is reflected in her films, including her Graduate short film, the science fiction thriller 'Man in the Moon’.
Composer - Amy Bastow
At just 31 years of age, Amy’s talents are making waves, both in Australia and internationally. She gained the attention of Hollywood film-maker James Cameron (Titanic, Avatar), co-composing the score for his 3D feature documentary, Deepsea Challenge, which was nominated for ‘Best Original Score’ at the 2015 AACTA Awards (Australian Academy Awards). TV credits include Winners & Losers, 8MMM Aboriginal Radio, Nan + a Whole Lot of Trouble and Mako Mermaids.
